Commercial Generator Installation in Northern NJ

A power outage affects different businesses in different ways. A restaurant can lose the contents of its walk-in, a dental office can lose a full day of appointments, and a liquor store can lose both its registers and its coolers. In Northern New Jersey, an outage caused by a summer storm or an ice event can last a full day or longer, which is a serious loss for a small business.

Trapani Electric installs standby generators and automatic transfer switches for small commercial buildings across Morris, Passaic, Essex, Bergen, and Union Counties. Erik sizes the unit to the loads you need to keep running, which may be the whole building or only refrigeration, lighting, and the point of sale system. He also wires the transfer switch at the service and files the electrical permit. Large campus and industrial standby systems require a full crew, and Erik will tell you if your project falls into that category.

What a Commercial Generator Installation Includes

A commercial standby generator installation includes the following work.

  • A load calculation of what has to stay on, so the generator is neither undersized nor larger than the building needs
  • Natural gas or propane units in the 20 to 60 kW range, which is typical for small commercial spaces
  • An automatic transfer switch, either whole-building or a load-managed panel for critical circuits
  • Placement that meets the manufacturer's clearance from doors, windows, and air intakes, along with the local setback requirement
  • A concrete or composite pad, conduit, and the service-side connection
  • The township electrical permit and inspection, and coordination with the gas contractor
  • A startup test under load before Erik leaves the site

Erik also services transfer switches and controls on existing generators, including units that will not exercise or will not transfer to generator power.

FAQs

Common Questions

What size generator does a small business need?
The size depends on which equipment has to stay on during an outage. A restaurant that keeps refrigeration, hood fans, lighting, and the POS system running usually needs a unit in the 30 to 48 kW range. An office that only needs lights, network equipment, and HVAC will often need less. Erik performs a load calculation instead of estimating from square footage.
Do we need a permit?
Yes. A standby generator with a transfer switch requires an electrical permit and inspection from the township, and the fuel line requires a separate gas permit. Erik files the electrical permit. The gas connection and its permit are handled by a licensed gas contractor.
Can the generator run only certain circuits?
Yes. A load-managed transfer switch or a separate critical-loads panel allows a smaller generator to carry refrigeration, lighting, and registers while shedding HVAC and other heavy loads. This is often the more practical arrangement for a small shop.
How long does installation take?
Most small commercial installations take a few days on site once the unit and the pad are in place, in addition to the permit and inspection timeline. Erik schedules the tie-in for after hours or for a day the business is closed, so operations are not interrupted during the changeover.
