Recessed Lighting Installation in NJ

Recessed lighting is the most frequently requested lighting job we do, mostly in kitchens, living rooms, and finished basements that were built with a single fixture in the middle of the ceiling. When the layout is planned correctly, the lights fill the room evenly and blend into the ceiling. When it is not, the result is a row of bright spots and a dimmer that buzzes.

Trapani Electric installs recessed lighting for homeowners across Morris, Passaic, Essex, Bergen, and Union Counties. Most of this work is retrofit, using thin LED wafer lights or remodel cans that fit into an existing finished ceiling through a single hole and are wired back to a new switch and dimmer. We plan the layout with you before anything is cut.

How We Plan a Recessed Lighting Layout

A good recessed lighting job includes the following:

  • Spacing calculated from the ceiling height rather than from a fixed grid
  • Lights placed over work surfaces in a kitchen rather than over the walkway
  • LED wafer lights or IC-rated cans, so that insulation can safely touch them
  • A dimmer matched to the lights so that nothing flickers or hums
  • A warm or neutral color temperature chosen for the room
  • Small access holes patched cleanly, or coordinated with your contractor

New construction and open ceilings receive standard housings, and finished ceilings receive retrofit units. In either case the circuit is permitted and inspected where the town requires it.

FAQs

Common Questions

How many recessed lights does a room need?
A common starting point is one light for every 4 to 6 feet of ceiling, adjusted for the ceiling height and for the way the room is used. A 12 by 14 kitchen usually needs six to eight. We work the layout out on site.
Can you add recessed lights to a finished ceiling?
Yes. Retrofit LED wafers and remodel cans fit through a single hole, and the wiring is fished through the ceiling cavity. Most rooms require no more than one or two small access holes.
Do I need a permit for recessed lighting?
Adding a new circuit or new fixtures generally requires an electrical permit in New Jersey. We file it with your town and handle the inspection.
Will they work with a dimmer?
Yes, as long as the dimmer and the lights are matched to each other. Mismatched LED dimmers cause most complaints about buzzing and flickering, so we pair them at the time of installation.
