Landscape Lighting Installation in NJ

Outdoor lighting on most Northern NJ homes consists of one floodlight over the garage and a porch light. Landscape lighting is a step beyond that, and it usually includes low-voltage path lights along the walk, uplights on the front of the house and on the large trees, step lights on the deck, and motion lights placed where they are actually useful.

Trapani Electric installs landscape and exterior lighting for homeowners across Morris, Passaic, Essex, Bergen, and Union Counties. The low-voltage portion runs from a transformer controlled by a timer or a photocell. The line-voltage portion, which includes the transformer's outlet, floodlights, and post lights, is wired to code with GFCI protection and buried at the proper depth.

Outdoor Lighting We Install

These are the jobs we are asked for most often:

  • Low-voltage path and walkway lights
  • Uplights on trees, stone, and the front of the house
  • Deck, step, and railing lights
  • Post lights and lamp posts at the driveway
  • Motion-sensor and dusk-to-dawn security lights
  • Weatherproof outdoor outlets and the transformer circuit
  • Timers, photocells, and smart controls

If you would like to see the effect before the wire goes in the ground, we will lay the fixtures out with you in the evening.

FAQs

Common Questions

Is landscape lighting low voltage?
Most of it is 12 volt and runs from a transformer plugged into a GFCI outlet. Post lights, floodlights, and the transformer's own outlet are line voltage, and they require a licensed electrician and, in most cases, a permit.
Does the wiring have to be buried?
Low-voltage cable can be buried at a shallow depth. Line-voltage runs to post lights or outlets must be in conduit or direct-burial cable at the depth New Jersey code requires. We handle both types.
Can the lights go on a timer?
Yes. A photocell turns the lights on at dusk, a timer turns them off at the hour you choose, and smart transformers let you control them from your phone.
How many lights do I need?
Fewer than most people expect. A front walk usually takes four to six path lights, and the face of a house takes two or three uplights. We lay the design out on site rather than selling you a box of twenty fixtures.
