Attic Fan Installation in NJ

On a hot day an unvented attic in Northern NJ can reach well above 130 degrees, and that heat moves down into the bedrooms below. An attic fan pulls the hot air out through a gable or roof vent and draws cooler air in through the soffits, which takes real load off the central air.

Trapani Electric installs and replaces attic fans for homeowners across Morris, Passaic, Essex, Bergen, and Union Counties. The work includes a dedicated circuit run up to the attic, a thermostat and, where it makes sense, a humidistat so that the fan runs only when it should, and a mounting that does not rattle the rafters. We also replace burned-out motors on existing fans, which is the most common attic fan call we receive.

What Goes Into the Job

A properly installed attic fan includes the following:

  • A gable-mounted or roof-mounted fan sized to the attic's square footage
  • A dedicated circuit run from the panel rather than a connection tapped off a bedroom light
  • A thermostat set to start the fan at around 100 to 110 degrees, plus a humidistat if the attic gets damp
  • A check that the soffit vents can supply enough intake air
  • Sealing around the mount so that the fan does not pull conditioned air up through the ceiling
  • A whole house fan instead, if you want to cool the living space at night rather than the attic

If your existing fan hums but does not spin, the motor is usually the cause. We can replace the motor or the entire unit.

FAQs

Common Questions

Do attic fans actually lower cooling bills?
They help most in houses that have a hot second floor and an attic with vents but little airflow. Removing the heat from the attic keeps the ceiling below cooler and the air conditioning cycles less often. Houses that already have good ridge and soffit venting see less benefit.
Gable fan or roof fan?
If you have a gable vent, a gable fan is simpler and does not require cutting into the roof. Roof-mounted fans are for houses with hip roofs or without a usable gable. We look at the attic and tell you which one fits.
Does an attic fan need its own circuit?
It should have one. Connecting it to a bedroom circuit is a common shortcut that causes nuisance trips in summer. We run a dedicated line from the panel.
My attic fan stopped working. Can you fix it?
In most cases, yes. The motor is the part that fails, and replacing the motor is often less expensive than replacing the whole unit. If the housing has rusted through, we will tell you.
