Electrical Troubleshooting in NJ

Most electrical problems in Northern NJ houses are ordinary ones. A breaker trips every time the microwave and the toaster run together, half the outlets in the living room are dead while the lights still work, or the bathroom lights dim when the furnace starts. These are the calls where a homeowner has already tried the obvious steps and needs someone to trace the circuit.

Erik handles the diagnostic work himself for homeowners across Morris, Passaic, Essex, Bergen, and Union Counties. He starts at the panel, checks loads and connections, and works outward with a meter instead of replacing parts one at a time. Once he locates the fault, we explain what it is, whether it is safe to leave for now, and what the repair involves, in writing.

Common Electrical Problems We Repair

We are regularly called out for the following problems:

  • Breakers that trip repeatedly, or a breaker that will not reset
  • Outlets or switches that are dead, warm, or discolored
  • Lights that flicker or dim when an appliance starts
  • A GFCI that trips with nothing plugged in
  • Buzzing from the panel, a switch, or a fixture
  • Burning or hot-plastic smell with no obvious source
  • Half of a circuit working and the other half not
  • Aluminum branch wiring or Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels flagged during a home sale

If something is sparking or smoking, or if the panel is hot to the touch, treat it as an emergency and call us by phone rather than filling out a form.

FAQs

Common Questions

Why does my breaker keep tripping?
There are three common causes. The circuit may be overloaded, there may be a short or a ground fault somewhere on it, or the breaker itself may be worn out. We measure the load and test the circuit to determine which one it is, because the repair is different in each case.
Half my outlets are dead but the breaker is not tripped. What is going on?
In most cases a loose connection at an outlet upstream has broken the circuit, or a tripped GFCI in another room, often in the garage or the bathroom, is protecting those outlets. We trace the circuit to find the break and repair the connection.
Is a flickering light dangerous?
It can be. A single fixture that flickers is usually a problem with the bulb or the switch. Lights that dim or flicker throughout the house at the same time can indicate a loose neutral or a problem at the service, which can damage appliances and should be checked soon.
Is the troubleshooting visit free?
In most cases, no. Tracing an existing fault takes time on site with testing equipment, so a troubleshooting visit is billed as a diagnostic visit. The diagnostic fee covers finding the problem and is separate from the price of the repair. Please ask about the fee when you call. Any repair is quoted in writing before the work begins.
